Discover Bánh Mì Ba Lẹ

At Bánh Mì Ba Lẹ, located at 10174 San Pablo Ave, El Cerrito, CA, you’re in for a treat with a vibrant menu offering an authentic taste of Vietnamese cuisine. Nestled in a cozy space, this family-owned gem has been serving up some of the best bánh mì sandwiches in the area. Whether you’re a local or visiting from afar, the moment you step into the restaurant, the mouth-watering smells and friendly atmosphere set the tone for a memorable meal.

The star of the menu is, of course, the bánh mì. This Vietnamese sandwich has gained international fame for its perfect blend of crunchy baguette, savory fillings, and fresh, crunchy vegetables. At Bánh Mì Ba Lẹ, they take this humble dish to a whole new level. The bread is crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and always fresh. It’s the perfect vessel for a variety of fillings, ranging from classic grilled pork to more adventurous choices like the house-special beef or tofu options for vegetarians.

The grilled pork is a standout. Marinated to perfection, the meat has a deep, savory flavor that contrasts beautifully with the tangy pickled vegetables. The combination of fresh cilantro, cucumber, and a dash of chili adds a zesty kick that takes each bite to the next level. And if you’re a fan of spicy food, don’t miss out on adding a little extra chili-it's the perfect heat that complements the sandwich without overwhelming the flavors.

For those who prefer something a little different, the tofu bánh mì is just as delicious. The tofu is grilled to a satisfying crispiness on the outside while maintaining a soft, tender interior. Paired with pickled carrots and daikon, this vegetarian option still delivers all the refreshing crunch and savory depth you expect from a bánh mì, but with a plant-based twist.

Beyond bánh mì, the menu also features a selection of traditional Vietnamese dishes that are sure to impress. The pho is another popular choice here. The rich broth, packed with aromatic herbs and spices, pairs perfectly with the tender slices of beef or chicken. The noodles are perfectly cooked, adding texture to the dish without overpowering the delicate flavors of the broth. It’s a comforting bowl of soup that warms you from the inside out, perfect for chilly days.

If you’re craving something lighter, the spring rolls are a great appetizer. They’re packed with fresh vegetables, herbs, and a choice of shrimp or pork, all wrapped up in soft rice paper. Served with a peanut dipping sauce, these rolls are the perfect way to start your meal. They’re light, refreshing, and the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and savory.

The restaurant’s atmosphere is casual but inviting. The small space creates an intimate dining experience, with friendly staff who make you feel right at home. Whether you’re dining in or taking your meal to go, the service is quick and attentive, ensuring you can enjoy your meal without a long wait.

  • Love this place! Hole in the wall sandwich shop. Dont be discouraged by the look of it, sandwiches are amazing. CASH ONLY. I forgot during my last visit and had to scramble to the bank. Super affordable, sandwiches are around $7

  • I tried their #1 and it was pretty good. $6.50 for a sandwich and a coke. Cheap and filling! Love the cucumber slices in the sandwich, it’s crisp and refreshing. The jalapeños give it some heat. I wish they offered sirracha sauce cause I like my banh mi drenched in the stuff. Fire! Fire!

  • Great and affordable banh mi. The man who owns the shop is very nice and efficient. The bread they use is always fresh, with the perfect ratio of soft interior and crunchy baguette exterior. The vegetables they use are also always very fresh. My favorite banh mi spot in the east bay for sure! Cash only and no ATM. so make sure that you bring cash with you.

  • I came here when it was first opened and the sandwiches have been delicious and continues to be currently. The only difference now is that the prices are a lot higher but that is to be expected. The selection of sandwiches is good enough and basic and that's a great thing because you don't want to be overwhelmed with so many choices that it gets hard to decide what to get and it compromises the quality of the food and ingredients. It's best to just stick with a small amount of food and specialize in it and that is what this place does. I forgot to mention that they offer other vietnamese food to like Pho and some ready to go rice and noodles dishes. They have a cooler case that has some interesting desserts and drinks. The unique assortment of snacks by the entrance piques my interest every time I go there. One thing I wish I could buy from them is the little french breads they use to make the sandwiches and the pickled vegetables. Overall great spot for a quick delicious meal or snack. Highly recommend them. I think they have a second place in the Oakland chinatown area too unless I'm mistaken by the name. Update Fall 2025: This place continues to be the best Banh Mi (vietnamese sandwich) place around the area. Unfortunately the owner was recently robbed and assaulted by the criminal. Please help support this mom and pop place stay in business. We need more places like this. I recently bought over $50 in sandwiches in support of them. Their sandwiches are so good I can eat several at a time.

  • Fantastic sandwiches! Bread was just right for a banh mi; crisp crust, soft interior, substantial. Pickled vegetables, fresh cilantro and jalapenos were wonderful. Opted for the ham and headcheese version (#1) and was glad I did! The headcheese added texture variety and savory flavours that worked well with everything else that was going on in the sandwich. All this for less than $7! I'll be back!
